The ongoing ministry of Whyte Ridge Baptist, at home and globally, relies completely on the faithful giving of the people who call Whyte Ridge home. The Bible speaks of tithes and offerings. A “tithe” literally means tenth or 10%. In the Bible tithes were the first 10% of one’s income. An offering is a anything you give above and beyond 10%.
Why Tithe?
The main purpose of tithing is to teach us to always put God first and to trust him. In Deuteronomy 12:22-29 tells us tithing helps us “learn to revere the Lord your God always.” Tithing reminds us God is the supplier of everything we have. It is also God’s invitation to an outpouring of his blessing (Deut. 14:28-29). In fact, in Malachi 3:10, we are told to put God to the test about his blessing. There we read: “Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it” (NIV). This is the only place in the Bible where we are told to do this. Basically God is saying to us, “Go ahead. See if you can out-give me.”
A Matter of Trust
Our giving is a direct indication of how much we really trust God to be faithful to what he says in His Word. Trusting him involves all aspects of life, including our finances. So are you willing to accept God’s invitation to put him to the test? Start tithing and see what he does in and through your life.
